It's a type of ants called "Kumbikumbi" here.
It was raining this morning.
While watching boys having their breakfast, I looked out the window and saw uncountable number of insects flying in the sky in the heavy rain.
Grasshoppers? No, they do not fly that high and that long.
Dragonflies? No, they usually have a long body.
They were flying so slow that birds resting on the tree could catch them without an effort.
Rain's gone. I went outside after the breakfast and saw those insects crawling the ground taxing their 4 big wings. 4 times bigger than their body.
Then, "Mwalimu!!! (Teacher!!)", one of the boys came up to me with handful insects.
He looked so happy putting a huge smile on his face which I've never seen.
"You know, teacher? they are so tasty!!" and he said throwing them in his mouth.
He said those insects were called "Kumbikumbi" which come out so many during rainy season.
They are with some oily stuff in their stomach, which is, they say, so tasty.
During this season in Kenya, mom fries them on a pan and serve them with Ugali.
Seeing is believing. I think I'll try "next time". Not yet.
Kumbikumbi" |
Wamumu way. |
